Common Uses For an Angle Grinder

Did you know that an angle grinder can be used for a large variety of different DIY tasks? Most people associate this power tool with the act of cutting, something that it is very well equipped to do and is very good at. However, it can also be used for other purposes:

Angle Saw

Sanding: A sanding disc has a plastic backing with a rough fibre padding. This turns any angle grinder into a very efficient sanding machine for any surface. This tool is not very useful for sanding the final layer, since it will leave a circular mark on the material. Paint removal: This disc is very handy for any times where you need to gently sand metal that has flecks of paint on the surface. By using one of these sponge pads, the underlying metal can be left unmarked. The downside to using these types of discs is that they wear out quickly while using them. Best used for delicate jobs. Grinding: Funnily enough, an angle grinder is also good at grinding! Grinding discs come in metal and stone varieties, and are usually 5mm thick. These types of disc are among the cheapest you can buy since they do not generally have to be super hard to grind a material. Even so, it is best to buy ones with diamond edges since they are very affordable these days, and will last a lot longer than cheaper pads!

There are many other uses for these amazing power tools, and some of them are not so obvious.

Angle Gauge - Choosing the Right Angle Finder

Before we delve into the question too deep, first let's think about DIY builders who have yet to bring an angle gauge into their workshops to begin with. Here's the problem: woodworking newbies might assume that the factory-installed gauges and meters on their newly-bought tools will get the job done without any trouble. Maybe this is true enough when all you need is a simple, rough cut on a 2x4. But for more precise miters and bevels, it's surprising just how inaccurate most power tools are in this regard. Even with lock-in style hardware, most angle gauges on the less expensive tools can fall horribly short in giving you an accurate cut. Eventually we all figure this one out and then start looking for a more reliable measuring gauge.

Angle Saw

In my case, I first went to a drafting supply store in search of sturdy triangle, ruler, and protractor. I reasoned that high-quality drafting tools would be the most reliable source I could find to check the angle gauge accuracy of my saw. I also bought an adjustable bevel gauge so I could transfer the protractor angles back over to my power tool blades. At first I was fairly happy with the set up - and confident that my bevels and angles were on target with my new measuring tools at the ready. However, after a while I started to notice that all the motions I was going through to set up my cuts was leaving me with a fairly large margin of error. For example, even if I were able to get a perfect angle set on my adjustable bevel gauge, I had question whether the lock-down screw would really hold things down tight enough while I moved on over to set the bevel on my saw. All it took was a small nudge (or worse, a drop to the floor) to send me back to square one. Complicating things was the fact that some of my settings depended a lot on the accuracy of my own eyes - which I've never trusted completely. So while I was happy to at least be using some better measuring tools than what came with my saw, I knew this wasn't the perfect solution.

Angle Saw

Digital Gauge vs Dial Gauge - How Much Accuracy Do We Really Need?

My next step in finding a better system for setting angles was to check out some of the more expensive angle gauges made for woodworking and home improvement. I saw some very impressive looking gauges from Starrett and Incra, but also noticed that many of the conventional dial gauges used to measure wood height, thickness, and depth had been replaced with digital readouts. Leading the way are companies like Wixey, which offer a host of new tools for making angle measurements with dead-on, digital accuracy. However, a reasonable question to ask is if a digital gauge can significantly improve your woodworking. Or in other words, how much accuracy do we really need in our woodshop? If the tried and true dial gauges have been good enough for fine woodworking up till now, what does digital have to offer that's any better?

The conclusion I've come to on this question is that for setting bevels on a saw blade, the digital angle gauge wins - hands down. This is particularly true in regard to cutting bevels for wood joints, where you really don't have room for error. Likewise, cutting 45 degree miter angles for joinery demands the same kind of accuracy. That said, there are plenty of cutting tasks in the workshop that really don't need that kind of precision. For example, rough construction for projects like outdoor sheds, picnic tables, and fences certainly don't need it - and in those cases I'm perfectly happy to come reasonably close with my twist and turn dial gauge.

You Can Build Your Own Circular Saw Table

Since circular saws are the portable version of a table saw, they are not meant to be fixed to a table. However, the portability can be a disadvantage if you are trying to make precision cuts such as miters or other angles. To help you make more accurate cuts, you can build a circular saw table in your own shop.

Angle Saw

Step 1

Angle Saw

Gather your materials which include a 3/4" thick medium density overlay (MDO) in a 36"X16" sheet, a 36"X8 1/2" piece, a 36"X1" piece, and two 36"X1 1/2 " pieces, a pencil, ruler, jigsaw, eight strips of 1"X2" wood, nails, hammer, drill, 1/4" and 1/2" drill bits, screws, circular saw, 1/2" dowel, speed square, and 1/4" carriage bolt.

Step 2

Mark the midpoint 3/4" in from the edge on the long side of the 36"X16" MDO.

Step 3

Using the ruler, mark a radius from this midpoint on that front edge. Next, draw a straight line 10 inches from and parallel to the back edge.

Step 4

To cut out the table that you just marked, use the jigsaw to cut down the 10" line, around the radius, and down the 10" line on the other side. You now have the shape of the table.

Step 5

Flipping the table to its back, nail six strips of the 1"X2" wood to all of the straight edges as the support for the table.

Step 6

Go back to the original midpoint mark on the topside and drill a 1/2" hole in which the dowel will be placed to serve as the pivot for the arm.

Step 7

Down from the hole on this topside, attach two more 1"X2" strips 10 inches long to serve as the fence for the guide.

Step 8

Take the two pieces of MDO that are 36"X1 1/2" and cut a 45-degree angle off of each end. With the angles facing inward, screw these two pieces onto the ends of the 36"X8 1/2" piece of MDO. This makes the carriage with spacers.

Step 9

Screw the 36"X1 1/2" MDO to the edge of the 36"X4" MDO at a 90-degree angle to create a guide lip. Attach this assembly to the support blocks of the carriage with screws. To make the opposite side of the guide, screw the 36"X2" MDO to the other side of the carriage. The circular saw's blade should pass through the gap as it follows the guide lip, but you may need to adjust the gap width for your particular saw.

Step 10

Now, with the saw against the guide lip and the blade in the gap, fix an opposite lip to keep the saw straight as it passing through the carriage by screwing on a 36"X1" strip of MDO on the opposite side.

Step 11

Flip this carriage over and measure down 7 inches from the top edge. Mark the midpoint of the width at this point and drill a 1/2" hole for the dowel.

Step 12

Removing the upper part of the carriage, place the base under the table and tap the 1/2" dowel through both the table and carriage, not allowing the dowel to stick out past the carriage blocks. Then, reattach the upper part of the carriage.

Step 13

Slide the carriage arm as far right as possible. Putting the speed square between the arm and the fence at a 45-degree angle, drill a 1/4" hole through the upper assembly and tabletop to secure the arm with a carriage bolt. Do the same at the 90-degree and 45-degree left angle to make repeated angle cuts.

Your circular saw table is ready to use. Place the wood to be cut against the fence. Line up the arm to the angle that you want. Put the circular saw in the guide arm with a depth set so that you will only cut 1/8" into the table. Make your cut. You can now make accurate angle cuts time after time with your circular saw table.

Outstanding Ways to Cut Angles For Crown Molding

Crown Molding can easily add a finishing touch to a room. It is basically applied along the closures where ceiling meets wall. It is an excellent way to decorate or accent a room or kitchen. It is also known as cornice.

Angle Saw

Various materials are used for this purpose such as wood, plaster, fiber, polyurethanes, aluminum, etc. But, most of the manufacturers manufacture plastic and foam for this purpose. It is often regarded as one of the most important architectural design pattern that is highly used to detail any interior space.

Angle Saw

The chief problem that is frequently faced while installing a crown molding is related to angles. It is very difficult to cut angles correctly. I will recommend you to practice a lot before actually cutting angles. If you are doing molding for the first time then you should choose a small project.

Let me tell you one thing that a quality miter saw and a coping saw is very essential for cutting angles correctly. The cost of a coping saw is less than a quality miter saw. In this article I would mainly stress on some basic cutting styles. Lets us start with the first one.

1. 45 Degree Angled Cuts

You have to cut the crown molding that is according to the dimensions of the room. Let me tell you that you must cut perfect 45-degree angles at corners because all the cabinets usually come in the shape of a square or rectangle. You must carefully study the dimension before installation.

2. Coped Cuts

It is usually seen that the corners which are not exactly 90/45 degrees are difficult to mold. Since all the corners are not perfectly square so I will advice you to use a coped joint for such interior corners.

3. Scarf Cut

Scarf joint is often used to join 2 segments together. Scarf joint is basically used to join two pieces of crown molding that are cut at 45 degree angle.

Crown molding consists of various kinds of molding that are specially designed for capping walls, cabinets, sinks etc. You can either purchase a pre-finished crown molding or you can even manually create and install your own designed molding. The decision is completely yours. Make sure that the design which you choose is compatible with other components and equipments of your kitchen.

You must practice a lot before actually cutting for a crown molding. I hope this article will help you to make this job a little easier.

Choosing the Correct Blade For an Angle Grinder

The angle grinder is a very useful tool when it comes to DIY in the house. It can be used for cutting, polishing and sanding various materials, but it is typically used on metal or stone.

Angle Saw

There are many different types of blade available for this tool, so how do you choose the correct one for the task at hand?

Angle Saw

The types of blade available are designed to be used on different materials:

Dry cutting disc: These are generally useful for cutting through bricks, stone and similar materials. The have smooth edge with indents going back to the centre of the disk every centimeter or so - these are for thermal expansion of the blade. They can also be used for rough cutting of tile in order to get the basic shape you require. Dry discs can easily chip or mark tiles, if a precise smooth cut is required use a wet cutting blade. Wet cutting disc: Normally used if a smooth, straight line is required. The blade edge is smooth all the way around the circumference, and this works best on ceramic tile, stone and marble. You need a wet saw to use one of these discs, but the end result is well worth it. Whatever you do, do not attempt to use an dry angle grinder with one hand while pouring water over the blade! I have seen many unfortunate 'accidents' happen to workers that used this method - instead, buy a proper wet angle grinder. Dry/ Wet cutting disc: A hybrid blade that is similar to the wet cutting disc, but is more suited to being used on larger pieces of masonry. The edges of this blade feature small channels that aid cutting. Again, a wet angle grinder is required.

Choosing the Correct Blade For an Angle Grinder

Mitre Saws - The Craftsman's Friend

For many years, craftsmen and others who took on woodworking projects used the mitre box, generally a wooden box with slots pre-cut at certain angles. This allowed the user to insert the mitre saw to cut 45-degree angles, 90-degree angles or one of several other corner angles necessary. The manual process using the mitre box helped prepare picture frames, wall and corner mouldings, trim and much more. This tried-and-true method is still used by those who employ mitre saws on a daily basis.

Angle Saw

Others, however, have chosen to employ new technology and power, even with such basic concepts as mitre angles and corners. Power saws provide a very clean, quick cut that is sometimes preferable to the cut made by a hand saw. As craftsmen, carpenters and others adopted power tools over the past few decades, the mitre saw and other table saws with angle settings, have become very popular.

Angle Saw

A saw on a mitre saw stand is one way to employ power and newer technology for those special angle cuts. A radial saw also allows the user to adjust the cut angle, using a guide that is adjustable by single degrees. Most of these newer saws have standard "stops" at 15 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. With a select piece of lumber against the guiding "fence" the cut will match the angle selected almost perfectly.

But there is more to the mitre saw concept than this. In recent years, adjustable saws and special blades have made it possible to cut quickly and smoothly when installing table tops, counter tops and assorted furniture items. Some have taken quite quickly to the compound mitre saw for counter and table work, because they can get a nice bevelled edge (making sharp corners nearly a thing of the past). New saws provide more gradual angles that, with a little sanding, can be very, very smooth.

Radial arm saws make it possible to achieve a perfect, custom cut with minimal passes of the blade at various angles. For example, the Dewalt radial arm saw was very popular in the United States for years. However, the company stopped production on this particular equipment more than two decades ago. Yet, some craftsmen still employ this standard machinery in their workshops.

For those requiring something that will produce special projects, the panel saw can be an ideal addition to the workshop. This particular saw is most often used for cutting large panels or sheets of wood into varying sizes for cabinet-making. The mitre saw is generally employed after this to shape the front of the cabinet or a drawer face, for example. The better hardwoods used for the cabinet doors, drawer faces and other decorative outer pieces must usually be cut with a good mitre saw so that good bevelled edges complete the decorative front.

A number of different types of saws can be employed in the well-equipped workshop, ranging from the basic mitre saw/box version, to the more complex table saws and radial arm saws. It's a matter of choice and work comfort.

Angle Cuts in Tile, and How You Can Master Them

You're tiling away, doing just fine, when suddenly you come upon a place where a tile breaker just won't "cut" it. It's time to crack out the wet tile saw, or for you outdoor lovers, the angle grinder with diamond bit blade. Doing angle cuts of any kind can be one of the most intimidating jobs when tackling a floor tiling job... but it can also be the most fun.

Angle Saw

Let's say you tiled up to a permanent cabinet, now you need to tile around this cabinet. It's going to take an L shaped tile to get around, no problem. Take your tile and measure and mark it off, making sure to leave yourself proper grout spacing. Draw your lines as dark as possible, as the wet tile saw or angle grinder can sometimes wipe or blow them off if not done dark enough.

Angle Saw

We'll start with a wet tile saw. Fill the saw up to appointed line with water; make sure the blade is fastened on tight, plug the tile saw in. Put on your safety equipment, also making sure your wet tile saw is not going to slide around as you are cutting the tile. On the floor is a great place to make sure it's as sturdy as it can be. Unless you have an expensive wet tile saw that comes with a stand!

Take the tile that you marked and place it on the bed of the saw. Start the saw and with both hands on the tile, push the tile gently through the blade keeping the blade on the inside of the line (the part you wish to cut off). Continue gently pushing it through until you almost reach the end point. Back the tile out of the blade and repeat the process on the other side of the tile. When you reach the end point again, the tile will break off by itself.

Now is when you will need your tile nippers or a pair of pliers. Simply snip or break the little piece in the inside corner of the tile that doesn't belong. Wipe dry the tile with a cloth and you're ready to continue tiling!

If you're the outdoorsman that will be working with an angle grinder, make sure you mirror the marks on the tile onto the back of the tile. You don't want to cut the top of the tile with the angle grinder. If you don't know what I mean by mirror, just picture what it would look like if you flipped the tile over, left is right, right is left, that sort of thing.

Once again, you'll need to wear your safety equipment and have power for the angle grinder. Turn the grinder on, and slowly work across the line you wish to cut through. Don't try to cut all the way through in one pass, 5 or 6 passes is the best way to go. Repeat the process for both lines and if all went well, the scrap tile piece should just pop out. Once again, if needed, you can use the tile nippers or pliers to break off any excess pieces in the corner that didn't come off.

The only difference now, is you will only have to brush the dust off the tile as there is no water used with an angle grinder. Once again, you're able to continue you're tiling!
Just so you know, another reason for using an angle grinder is when you're cutting stone tile, as the wet tile saw doesn't work well for that application. That's a free one on me.

Crown Molding - Quick Guide to Spring Angles

When it comes to cutting crown molding on a sliding compound miter saw, spring angle plays a key part in getting it right. If you don't understand "spring", you need to read this.

Angle Saw

Making crown cuts on a sliding compound miter saw is tricky enough as it is, but when spring angle comes into the equation, it's yet another thing that can lead to mistakes and a waste of good wood. You need to know what spring angle your molding has, but first of all you need to know how to choose the right type for your room.

Angle Saw

If you are going to the trouble of cutting your own crown molding, the least you can do is choose the appropriate type for the height of your ceiling, and that is where spring type comes into play. The industry makes three common types -- 38 degrees, 45 degrees and 52 degrees. Basically, the lower the ceiling, the lower the angle to choose. This is because the spring is the angle at which the molding sits away from the wall.

The best angle at which to view molding is face-on. In a room with a lower ceiling, the average person's eye is closer to the molding, so to get a face-on view, the molding has to be angled more steeply, which means that the lower 38 degree spring angle is best. Conversely, for a room with a higher than average ceiling, the crown molding needs to be angled more shallowly because the average viewer will be lower in relation to it. The molding basically needs to point down towards the viewer more, so the higher 52 degree spring is best. For an average ceiling, the normal 45 degree spring will be the optimal choice.

Now, if you have already purchased your molding, and you didn't pay any attention to what spring factor it was, you are going to have a hard time cutting it on your sliding compound miter saw, especially if you intend to cut it flat using a bevel setting on a sliding compound saw. So, it's important to find out what spring your molding has before you start.

A quick way to determine the spring angle is to take a piece of waste wood and make a clean 45 degree miter cut. Now take a piece of the crown molding and press the angled section at the back of the bottom part (the part with most decoration) against the fence of your compound sliding miter saw. The fence is acting as the wall of your room and you are looking at the molding from above, as if it were sticking out from the wall.

Now, drop the 45 degree scrap wood into the gap behind the molding. If it won't fit, you have 38 degree molding; if there's a gap, you have 52 degree molding; and if it fits perfectly, you have 45 degree molding. It's as simple as that.
